How to: Install the Android SDK

Download the latest Android SDK (preferably the zip file not the exe).

Unzip the package to the root of C:\.

NOTE: This will output a folder called "android-sdk-windows".

Open up the android-sdk-windows folder and launch the SDK Manager.

When you launch the SDK Manager for the first time it will ask for which packages to install. The only package we are concerned with at this time is "Android SDK Platform-tools, revision 3". You can reject all the others if you are not interested in them.

Once that is finished, you will need to install the USB drivers included with the Android SDK.

Click on"Available Packages" on the left.
Expand "Third party Add-ons".
Expand "Google Inc. add-ons".
Check "Google Usb Driver package, revision 4".
Installed Selected.

Once that's finished installing, you can close the SDK Manager.

Go to the Control Panel, and select the System Properties (Windows XP) or System (Windows Vista/7).

Select the Advanced settings;

Windows XP: Click on the Advanced tab.
Windows Vista/7: Click on Advanced system settings on the left.

Click on Environment Variables.

Under the "System variable" section, you will look for "Path". Double-click on it.

In the "Variable values" section, add at the very end the location of the tools & package-tools folder, with a semicolon separating these two paths from the rest, e.g. %SystemRoot%;C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools;C:\android-sdk-windows\tools.

On the device, ensure that USB Debugging in enabled (Settings » Applications » Development).

Plug the device into the computer via USB cable. The computer will attempt to install the drivers automatically.

On success, open the command prompt on the computer, and type in the following command to sure everything is setup properly:

adb devices

If it lists any devices, everything is fine and you are finished. If not, the drivers may not be installed correctly, please continue.

Open the Device Manager.

Right-click on My Computer (Windows XP) or Computer (Windows Vista/7).
Click on Manage.
Click on Device Manager on the left.

You will probably see Unknown Device with ADB listed under it with a yellow exclamation mark.

Right-click on ADB.

Click on "Update Driver Software".

Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".

Click on "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer".

Click on "Have Disk".

Click on "Browse".

Navigate to "C:\android-sdk-windows\extras\google-usb_driver" and select "android_winusb.inf".

Click on "Android ADB Interface".

NOTE: You will get an Update Driver Warning, click on "Yes".

Once finished installing the driver, open the command prompt on the computer, and type in the following command to sure everything is setup properly:

adb devices

If it lists any devices, everything is fine and you are finished. If not, you may have further issues and will have to do further research on your own.

Yes it does say the themes are only for Google Chrome 3.0 and above but still lets you download the file from your old browser , that fair enough but after downloading try opening the .crx file it gives using an older version of google Chrome :P it goes into an infinite loop hehehehehe I has such high expectations from them :P check it out at your own risk :P

Are we always in search of an IDEA ?

Yes as a popular brand has its tagline "An IDEA can change your life.". It surely can. I would say the human brain is the least tapped, under utilized natural resource ever. We can think of anything anywhere anytime of the day or night. And still I come across people, even me at times asking for a million dollar idea. Maybe thats it ..maybe we really are over rating it.

Actually being in the IT industry its quite easy to be disillusioned in to over hyping it. We all have seen rather assumed that ideas make money. All we need is one out of this world extra ordinary idea to make it big in the industry. Naaaaaa I dont think so thats the case , yeah few of the major hits in the industry are good ideas but I dont think when they were actually put to table in the first meeting they looked even close to what they ended up becoming. The market changes to frequently , that even if your idea is even worth something when you think about it by the time you implement it :P .

No I am not trying to discourage working on the million dollar idea you think you have but yes what I am discouraging is thinking it over and over again. Start with it , maybe 10 steps and you might loose interest in it or realize that its not worth that much but atleast you would have done something about ti and LEARNT out of it. Youll make sure your next idea passes through this new learning , and over time your ideas get so filtered and tested in your head that youll get better, more concrete ideas popping up next time.

Over the years (not many :P) Ive realized few things/ ways to test them out :-

Skin it - Take out the feathers that is making the idea fly so high in your head. Everyone in the world needs this.If I make this Ill have about half the world signing up for it and the other half asking for sign up invitations - No get to ground reality and then start thinking about it, because at times it hinders our logical way of thinking.
Self grilling - Imagine that the idea popped out of the person you hate/detest the most and you have to fail it no matter what. Come up with good logical reasoning for it , and not that my mom wont be able to use it so its not a good idea.
Friendly test - Once it passes the self grilling put it up infront of your friends you trust and most probably would end up working with on the idea. Most of the ideas would go down here, there could be 2 reasons for it.

The team I chose was wrong (90% people would think this way). They dont get the big picture.
The team was right.

But if you could not sell the idea to a bunch of people you know , then forget convincing the world for it. Drop it start thinking again.

Acid test -get in a few industry people , the industry you targeting or the target audience of your idea. Ask them would they use it ?
Mom test - ask your mom :P explain her the whole scenario and then your idea. See if she accepts it :P.
Ok we can skip the last test but yeah it does help at times.
Get to work - Gather the team you plan to work with most likely the ones in step 3. They should be enthu enough that you can start.

Keep small targets , follow what most people do - release small features, release more frequently. This will keep your target audience interested too.

What is the right time to take a dip in the ocean to unearth the treasures deep down !? This is conversation Me vs Me...

Me : Get into it as young as possible . When u r young u have a very strong will to do something, u get things done no matter what, stay with the problem no matter how big it is until u solve it. You can work long hours , non-civilized timings. and last but not the least what everyone preaches.. You dont loose but at this age. Dont have much at stake, got ur parents , siblings for support (if u r one of those lucky ones) just in case something goes wrong, dont have a family of ur own to worry about and hey if nothing works out u can always take up a job . You have YOUNG age to ur advantage

Me : Hey hey hey hold on, yes ive read , heard all this many times but dont you wonder at times that starting that such a young age you might get lost half way through. I mean most of the " successful " ventures you can think of from YOUNG "technologist/programmers" needed a bit of luck to get famous , if not luck help from seasoned people to make it big (who actually take a big bite out of ur portion). And from my current experience sometimes even seasoned people in the industry take help form more seasoned people (even a bigger bite gone).
So why not make yourself seasoned and bank on yourself than to bank on someone else. Youl actually get to keep your portion with you. Get experience , a good look into the industry and then take the plunge , in the worst case you still be hiring someone else to make it big but the odds of that happening are in ur favour.

Me : Yeah that is there but then if you grow that big that you actually need a CEO for your company or someone to help you scale to a totally different level , its a good problem to have (My current manager uses it a lot), if you reach that stage youve already made it big. Youll have a big enough portion for sure.

Me : Do you realise how much politics it injects when your company does that !? It kills to see what you made being run by someone else (maybe even against your wishes) just because its good for "marketing" purpose !!! No matter what youl be a technologist at heart for a long long time and understanding the marketting stuff will tick you off.

Me : But hey wat the end of the day whatever that guy is doing would be in favour of the GROWTH of the company so at the end of the day its a win win situtation right ?! thats what you wanted in the first place ... to make it big !? thats what you hired him for !? right ?!

Me : Ye to hai ... but I dont know deep down inside its the thrill of doing it all on my own would keep me going for a longer time than otherwise

Me : Such rigid lines can spell doom too.

What the @#$% ? Till the time you are thinking when ,what, why ? Its not the right time for you to get into it. When you start thinking How? rather than When? thats when you know its time.

Been getting this error for more than 5 hours now. Though i can log on to my blogger , orkut , ig and other accounts but not gmail. Googled it and found that people at times have faced this problem and it lasted for more than a couple of weeks. Man I got to do something about it but the problem is that I not only had google as the primary account but also as the backup account for all my mails. Guess Ill reduce worshiping google to 23hrs 59min of a day.
Sorry google had to do this.

Everyone knows that India a very strong IT population. But few know that India has the highest number of freelancers in the world. A lot of IT professionals moonlight or work on their own, mainly on outsourced projects from the US and Europe.

The modes of payment has been via Paypal, Online bank transfer and Western Union. So far, Indian have grudgingly accepted payment via Paypal because withdrawing money can be laboriously painful experience. Until yesterday, Indian could not withdraw money directly to their Indian banks. The only option they had was to request payment via cheque and this can take anywhere from three weeks to five weeks for the payment to arrive via snail mail. Add another week for the bank processing time and you can understand the situation. Also, because the cheques are sent via normal mail, there have been instances where the mail is lost and this can get into a long drawn process of getting another cheque issued. The lesser said about this muddle, the better.

All this has changed when Ebay, Paypal’s parent company, announced that Indians can withdraw money directly to their bank accounts. Paypal says that it can take from 5 to 7 business days for the money to be transferred. Sure, its nowhere close to instant money transfer but its a definite improvement from the 25 to 30 days wait period. More importantly, no more worries about lost snail mails.

The biggest surprise was the service charge that Paypal charges. It’s a mere Rs.50 ( US$ 1.20) for amounts till Rs.7000. Even that is waived off for amounts greater than Rs.7000. This is fantastic news because earlier one had to pay around 4% as service charge. This means if I withdrew $1000, I had to pay $40 as service fee. That’s about Rs.1500 just as fees.

Another good news is that Paypal has partnered with almost all the big banks. The participating banks are State Bank of India , Bank of India, Canara Bank, Union Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, ING VYSYA Bank, UTI Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, HSBC, and Citibank.

Doing the math suggests a current valuation for the social network enfant terrible of $15 billion. Seeing the rapid growth in sales of mobile phones with camera and digital cameras in India google is sure it would be an even bigger hit. From the moment it released IE7 almost a year ago, Microsoft has restricted the browser to users who can prove they own a legitimate copy of the operating system. Before Microsoft allows the browser to download, it runs the user's PC through a Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation test, a prime part of XP's antipiracy software.

When it instituted the requirement in 2006, Microsoft said rights to IE7 was one of the rewards for being legal. It changed its mind Thursday, saying the move is in users' best interest.

Adobe has launched the beta version of its new media player, using the same format and streaming technology seen in YouTube and other video sharing sites.

CBS, PBS, Yahoo, and several other Internet companies have already pledged support for Adobe's new endeavor. The player will include embedded advertising either through forced-play video clips or permanent banners around the video window.

It is a move for Adobe into a market that is already highly concentrated. Microsoft's Windows Media Player currently holds the most digital player market share, with Real Player and Quicktime also remaining computer staples. Microsoft also has Silverlight, a new Web-based media format. Adobe's main focus with the new player is solely on the playback of Flash video

I personally prefer using VLC but would be tempted to try this one just for the grins and kicks. Change is always good I guess.

Microsoft released the beta of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 to a private group of testers, taking one step closer to the anticipated official launch in the first quarter of next year.

One beta tester, Brandon LeBlanc, author of the Windows Experience blog, has already written about his experience with SP1.

In addition to a couple of minor user interface changes, he has noticed improvements to the overall responsiveness of his PC and laptop, which both got the beta software. He particularly noticed that resuming activity after the machines hibernate and copying files from one directory to another work faster.

LeBlanc also reported improved battery life on his laptop.

SP1 also appears to have solved some wireless networking issues he had, which caused his computer to lose connectivity often, especially after the laptop was hibernating. Since he installed SP1, that problem has gone away, he said.

Sabeer Bhatia is promoting yet another project(still in beta), this time its a social networking site. The look and feel of the site is good but nothing special to attract users from orkut , facebook or other such already famous ones. its a cross between linkedin , orkut and facebook (A shift which you can see in orkut as well).

They have thrown in a point scheme with the site, make people join the network(both personal and professionals) and gain points and exchange for rewards/gifts (Worth checking out)

This could be an interesting phone to look out in the future (as it isint released yet), it has all the basic features except for the flash(if you consider it necessary (I don't). You all must be wondering what is different in it form the look alike 6300... guess what ?!!? it is WiFi enabled!! What else could you ask for !?

Considering the fact that 6300 was not aimed at the higher end of the consumers ,if they price it reasonably , say around 12K (yeah, thats what i expect) its going to be one killer of a phone!!
WiFi , expected price and nokia's reliability makes it worth mentioning.

I personally would go for E51 cause of its business applications but hey 6301 would be better in the multimedia area.What I have noticed is that Nokia E series doesn't have a good loudspeaker and if u play music on it , it sounds a lil crappy, but hey E series aint made for that ... so it comes down to your personal preference .
